A film by Deba Ranjan, Swapnarani Chakrabarty
The Villages Last Tide explores the slow disappearance of coastal communities along the Bay of Bengal, where homes, farmlands, and memories are steadily claimed by the rising sea. In Podampeta, and Chhenu—once thriving villages—elders recall walking hours to reach a distant ocean that now stands at their doorsteps. Fields have turned to saltwater, forests have vanished, and old schools lie buried beneath the waves.
Through intimate conversations with villagers who lost land, homes, and livelihoods, the film captures a haunting portrait of human resilience in the face of erosion. As families migrate to far-off cities and the shoreline collapses year after year, only fragments remain—broken walls, empty paths, and the voices of those who stay behind.
The Villages Last Tide is a quiet witness to places fading into the sea.
Group of environment activists came forward to carry the message of sea erisoin and urgency of protection of environment to many parts of the state. They spread the painful experience of Chhenu and Podampeta villages.
